Unmanned Aircraft Systems Policy Approved
Senior Staff recently approved a policy governing the use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly known as drones, on College property. The policy is designed to ensure safety, privacy and compliance with applicable laws and Federal Aviation Administration regulations. It applies to any College employee, student, vendor or visitor seeking permission to use drones on College property or on official College business.
Under the new policy, College employees and students must comply with FAA regulations and federal laws and receive approval from Fred Linger, manager of business services, before operating a UAS. Outside contractors must be licensed by the FAA, be insured and receive approval by Linger at least two weeks before operating a UAS on College property.
“These devices are becoming more popular and affordable, so it made sense to work with our insurance and risk management provider to develop the new policy,” said Mark Kohlman, chief business officer. “Safety is the top goal as well as privacy.”
