Be Your Brand
A bitten piece of fruit that keeps the doctor away, a swoosh, a bulls-eye, and a parachute preventing a briefcase from it's demise. I expect that you would be able to recognize the first three when you look at them, and I hope that you will get to know the last one.
When you see the Apple, Nike, and Target logos, I am sure certain descriptive words come to mind, such as "relevant," "excellence," and "value." A branding strategy is meant to represent the organization, and the reputation and value that the organization has. When branding is inconsistent, the organization fails at achieving its goal.
It's a smart idea to think of yourself as a brand. You don't need your own logo, but we do suggest marketing a consistent version of yourself through your resume, cover letter, and the rest of the application process. Using consistent formats and fonts for contact headers on different materials, such as your resume and cover letter, allow the reader to see that you have attention to detail - without you even saying that you have it! If you are applying to a more creative position, allow your skills to shine in a professional manner through formatting and content. This also goes beyond the written word, into the digital sphere. Make sure that all forms of social media that you use, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Vine, Pinterest, Instagram, Google+, tumblr, personal blogs, YouTube, etc. all portray you in a positive, professional, skilled, and mature light.
So remember that dare-devil briefcase I talked about before? That's the new logo for the Career Development Office here at Kenyon. Most of you will not carry a briefcase in your lifetime thanks to the advances of technology (thank you, Apple), but like the handshake, is a universal symbol for careers and jobs. The parachute is meant to represent us, as we help you navigate career exploration and launch as a prepared individual into the next phase of your life.
