Class of 2018
Major — English and Psychology
Hometown — San Rafael, California
I’m a junior at Kenyon majoring in English and psychology, recently returned from a semester studying abroad in Stockholm, Sweden. Some personal favorites include list-making, semicolons, animals, introspection, falling snow, travel, lavender, good conversation, education, novels, postcards, color-coordinated notes, and peanut butter. My ideal Saturday night is one spent under a blanket enjoying a good book. I’m on the equestrian team at Kenyon, I volunteer at the Knox County Animal Shelter, and I love the time I spend with kindergartners at Wiggin Street Elementary School. In the future, I hope to have a job working with kids, words, or (ideally) both.
It can be easy to look at beautiful websites and students beaming in college brochures’ glossy photographs and expect that that flawless, cheery person will always be you. It won’t. This isn’t because there’s something wrong with Kenyon. It’s because no matter how much you connect with an environment, you can’t escape the reality: Life brings both highs and lows.
When I received my first graded English paper here, I scrolled quickly through the pages and saw comments everywhere. Initially, this led to dismay. Now, it leads to delight.
The holiday season means traveling, especially for the many Kenyon students who live far from Ohio. Now that I’ve reached the point where my phone automatically connects to the Columbus airport Wi-Fi, I thought I’d share one of my favorite travel stories.
’Tis the season for sweaters, pumpkin pie, giving thanks and class registration. Here at Kenyon, it’s that time of the year when students are planning potential schedules, meeting with advisors, looking up major and minor requirements, and soliciting friends’ opinions about classes.
I’m still not entirely sure how my teammates managed to convince me to do this, but a couple Saturdays ago, I was up at 4:30 a.m., dressed in show clothes (all borrowed), in a minivan with six other women on our way to a horse show at the University of Findlay.
